About the Music

This score embodies the lead character Thomas' perspective throughout the film. Charlie Dunnam is a resurging legend in the comedy field who is attempting a comeback after a personal scandal impacted his public image. Musically we hear lots of texture and excitement when he is on screen to resemble his confidence and arrogance. Thomas, however, is up-and-coming and is struggling with substance abuse behind the scenes. Musically, when we see Thomas we hear more simplistic instrumentation focused on the piano and drum beat pattern similar to that of a nervous heartbeat. When Thomas breaks down backstage the saxophone is brought together with the piano to signify the emotional similarity between the two characters at their lowest points. This approach helps the audience sympathize and experience the development of the story from Thomas' point of view.
